White Pass & Yukon Route Sets Historic New Daily Ridership Record!
SKAGWAY, AK - The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad (WP&YR) proudly announced that it carried 7009 passengers on Wednesday July 23, 2008 setting a new daily ridership record.
Gary C. Danielson, President of the WP&YR enthusiastically commented, "This historic milestone - breaking the 7000 passengers in one day threshold - is truly symbolic for us. This milestone is testament to our brand, our people and our industry partners. This milestone celebrates our investment in infrastructure, service and systems."
"It was just a week ago that we dared think about a 7000 passenger day. Yesterday's feat was accomplished with all trains being on time and without any sense that it was going to be a record day. Maybe it was the horrible weather, but it didn't feel like a record day until it was all over.
I'm very proud of our people and this achievement. To grow the business to this level is very rewarding for all of us here at White Pass", Gary added.
The White Pass & Yukon Route narrow gauge railway was built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush and is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark – a designation shared with icons like the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty. The WP&YR is Alaska’s most popular shore excursion and North America’s busiest tourist railroad, carrying 461,388 passengers in 2007.
White Pass & Yukon Route is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tri-White CorporationWhite Corporation based in Toronto, Ontario. The Tri-White Corporation is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange as TWH.

Fiddletown and Copperopolis Railway
Fiddletown and Copperopolis Railway is the name of a book of narrow gauge cartoons created by Carl Fallberg, a Walt Disney artist. The railway never existed, but the towns of Fiddletown and Copperopolis do exist in California gold country. Fallberg's mythical railroad extends between the two towns, and in the center of his book is a map of the railroad. At the top of the map is a dashed line with an arrow pointing north, with the legend, "Future connection to White Pass and Yukon Route." John Westfall has handed out copies of Fallberg's book to many White Pass employees; hence the prank on him.

Future Connection to the Fiddletown and Copperopolis Railway

Here's a photo of John McDermott with John Westfall at the "Future Connection to the Fiddletown and Copperopolis Railway."
One of the Carcross train crews thought they'd play a prank on John Westfall. They asked the painter to make them a sign saying, "Future Connection to Fiddletown and Copperopolis Railway". On their northbound trip from Skagway to Carcross, they stopped at the spur at 55 mile Pit, and planted the sign. The next day, John Westfall was the engineer on the southbound train. Conductor John McDermott radioed John Westfall and asked him to stop at the 'junction' at 55 mile spur. As the train slowed approaching the switch, Engineer Westfall radioed, "Where did that come from??" "From Carl Fallberg", was the reply.

Baldwin 69

Finally Baldwin 69 is operating on the most Scenic Railway of the world, the White Pass & Yukon Route between Skagway (Alaska) and Carcross (Yukon/Canada). Saturday June 14, 2008 the engine is on his way up to the hill. This season, the steam trains are running only between Skagway and Fraser. The image was made by Boerries Burkhardt during his 2008 visit.
